Day trip train fares slashed in Devon and Cornwall
Most Cheap Day Return train fares in Devon and Cornwall have been slashed in a bold new initiative to get more people on the trains.
Many Cheap Day Return fares have been cut by as much 30 - 40%. A Cheap Day Return from Plymouth to Newquay was £9.80 and is now £7.00 (31%). A Cheap Day Return from Barnstaple to Exeter was £10.70 and is now £7.00 (35%). A Cheap Day Return from Truro to Looe was £11.00 and is now £7.00 (36%).
One of the biggest reductions is in Devon where the Cheap Day Return fare for travel on the scenic Tarka Line between Crediton and Barnstaple has been reduced by 44% from £10.70 to £6.00.
The fare cuts have been brought in by First Great Western who took over Devon and Cornwall local and branch line services as part of their new franchise in April.
The move has been welcomed by the Devon and Cornwall Rail Partnership, a partnership of local councils, the rail industry and others which works to promote the two counties’ branch lines.
Rebecca Catterall from the Partnership said “These new cheaper fares are a great incentive for people to get out and about and discover our beautiful scenic branch lines in Devon and Cornwall.
”Use of the branch lines has increased healthily over the last few years and this bold move will certainly help boost numbers further and will encourage more people to visit the great places you can get to by train.”
Cheap Day Return fares are typically available after 09 30 Monday to Friday and any time on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays. The GroupSave promotion allows four people to travel for the price of two Cheap Day Return fares.
